Spain Issues 277 Online Gambling Licenses
Spanish government ensures new gambling era will be open to all foreign operators.
By John W |Jun 14, 2012The Spanish government issued an incredible 277 online gaming licenses to operators and rejected only three license applications for the official opening of its newlyregulated market.
Spain Launches Online Gambling
Spain awarded online gaming licenses to all the major operators such as Betfair, Bwin.party, 888, PokerStars and bet365, but ensured that it was gaming for all by also awarding licenses to some of the smaller applicants which run only one of online casinos, sports betting, poker and bingo.
Secretary of State for Finance Miguel Ferre said upon announcing the 277 licenses that regulation would create new opportunities within the Spanish gaming and technology sectors, and would also make a valuable contribution to boosting the coffers of the cash-strapped nation.
Spain's Gaming General Directorate only granted most of the larger online gambling operators their licenses after those operators agreed to pay millions of euros in back-taxes to the authorities for gaming duties collected between 2009 and 2011.
All Going Smoothly
According to initial reports the change-over has gone very smoothly. All licensees have had to move their operations over to .es domain sites, excluding Spanish online gamblers from their regular .com websites. Bankrolls are being moved over to the new accounts and converted to euro balances in cases where customers use other currencies.
888casino, Betfair and other online casinos listed in our directory are promising to make the transition smooth and seamless, and customer service staff should be on hand to help players with any difficulties.
