As Delaware moved one step closer to making online gambling a reality on Tuesday, California was throwing in the cards on their proposal.
Delaware moves forward with online gambling
The Delaware state house passed a bill that authorizes internet gaming under the control and operation of the Delaware Lottery. The internet lottery games would be offered solely to persons within the State of Delaware.
California and New Jersey fold for now
California pulled a proposed bill off the table on Tuesday temporarily killing any hopes of moving forward in the State. The chairman of the California Senate panel that oversees the gambling industry decided to withdrawn the proposed legislation.
In California tribal groups currently have the exclusive rights to offer video gaming and many tribes were strongly opposed to the current legislation moving forward.
Along with California, there was speculation that New Jersey would follow suit and likewise pass legislation that would authorize some type of internet gambling.
Citing New Jersey Governor Christie's political ambitions and not wanting to push the issue during an election year, along with a lack of interest by both parties, the bill's sponsor New Jersey Senator Lesniak has conceded that their bill will not see any action until later in the year.
Slim odds on national internet gambling law
Two proposals were introduced on Capital Hill in 2011. Texas Republican Joe Barton introduced H.R. 2366 to the House in July, 2011, and California Republican John Campbell introduced H.R. 1174 to the House in March, 2011. Neither bill has seen any action in 2012.
In December the US Department of Justice (DOJ) clarified its position on the Wire Act of 1961 clearing the way for states to use the internet to sell lottery tickets. Many proponents of online poker saw this as positive news that 2012 would bring the national internet gambling legislation that had been talked about often in 2011.
So far there has not been any push on Capital Hill for new internet gaming legislation in 2012.
We will be watching to see how it all unfolds in the weeks ahead
