Internal Strife, Waning Support Stall Shinnecock Casino Plans - Southampton, NY Patch

Internal Strife, Waning Support Stall Shinnecock Casino Plans - Southampton, NY Patch

Almost two years after receiving federal recognition, the Indian tribe's aspirations of opening a gaming facility are still up on the air, Newsday reports.
As Gov. Andrew Cuomo eyes a referendum to allow seven new non-Indian gaming facilities in New York State, the Shinnecock Indian Nation's ambition to open a Long Island casino continues to face set backs, according to Newsday.
The Southampton tribe cleared a major hurdle in October 2010, when it received recognition from the federal government, but more recently a number of sites that were considered for a casino have proven to be unfeasible, or at least unlikely, Newsday reports, including Nassau Coliseum and Belmont Park.
A number of politicians who once backed a casino at Belmont have withdrawn their support, according to Newsday, and tribal leaders' requests that Cuomo meet with them to discuss a suitable location for a Shinnecock facility in the state have been refused.
Internal factors have affected the tribe's plans as well.
Two of the Shinnecock Nation's three tribal trustees were removed from office last month, along with two members of the tribe's gaming authority, after allegations that they were conducting business deals without the tribe's approval, according to Newsday.
